Spooky Middle Grade Books
Hi there everyone! Well the holidays are upon us in full force, and everyone’s out shopping for the perfect gifts for their loved ones. My mom is an expert at this, as every year she finds exactly the type of book I want to read during the holidays: A spooky story full of ghosts and other ghouls.
Yeah you read that right. The holiday season is the perfect time for a good ghost story, and if you don’t believe me may I direct your attention to one of the most iconic holiday stories ever, A Christmas Carol by the illustrious Charles Dickens. Dickens himself even said he was writing a ghost story for Christmas. Because of course that is exactly what people need for this time of year.
So in honor of Mr. Dickens, and a classic holiday ghost story, here are some awesome middle grade books full of spooky, scary ghosts, ghouls, and monsters! - MARIELLE
While some books on this list are spooky with a dash of funny, this one is true, terrifying horror that’ll make you sleep with the lights on. Basically it’s the perfect gift for that 12-year-old you know who doesn’t understand why they’re not allowed to read H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King.
True horror for a middle grade audience is difficult to find, but THIS TOWN IS NOT ALRIGHT hits that nail right on the head. You will immediately get lost in the story of Beacon, who is one of the greatest protagonists I’ve ever read, and his sister as they navigate the chilling world of Driftwood Harbor. If you love sibling stories with a creepy mystery surrounding a Stepford Wives like small town, you should be reading this book.
This book even feels like a Charles Dickens novel, and is perfect for anyone who likes dry, witty humor with a huge ugly monster who wants to eat children.
This is one of those stories you just want to read aloud because the words are so well-written with an omniscient narrator storytelling style. Each word draws you deeper and deeper into the story of Bethany, Ebenezer, and the Beast until the real world fades away and only their world remains. THE BEAST AND THE BETHANY is a fantastical, funny adventure, a tale of friendship, and feels like being dunked into a Charles Dickens novel. A hilarious, enjoyable, and heartwarming read.
This book is for the mystery lover in your life who would love THE HARDY BOYS, but with just a little more spooky.
An awesome adventure, mystery story good for kids and kids at heart, of all ages. Charlie is a great protagonist and the trio of him and Dizzy and Johnny just make this book so much fun to read. Full of just enough spooky to make your spine shiver without being too scary, THE LONGEST NIGHT OF CHARLIE NOON is a story everyone will have a super fun time reading!
Now we get into the good old fashioned ghost stories, with a haunting of one of America’s most famous families. The perfect gift for anyone who likes historical fiction, mystery, and spooky combined.
Who doesn't love a good ghost story? And with a mystery surrounding the Roosevelt family on top, there's really nothing more to ask for. The world building in this story is amazing and exciting as ghosts are very real and simply walk among the living. The relationship between Eleanor and Alice is wonderful and real, and the supernatural mystery they get caught in is beautifully plotted. ELEANOR, ALICE, AND THE ROOSEVELT GHOSTS is one thrilling spooky read!
More ghosts to come with this one, and with a dash of evil stepmother as well. A new kind of grimm faery tale and ghost story all in one!
A wonderful mystery wrapped inside a ghostly tale, full of fun, humor, and heart THE MYSTERIOUS MESSENGER is too good to put down. Maria is an absolute star of a protagonist that you will fall in love with. She's brave, she's strong, she loves books, and she can communicate with ghosts. Seriously could there be a better heroine? With suspense, plot twists that could be found in any fairy tale, and a mystery that'll keep you guessing, this is a truly enchanting tale!
Now we dive into a a true, creepy murder mystery. But you know with actual ghosts, because that is what all murder mysteries are missing. This is for the kid in your life who needs an age appropriate Agatha Christie novel.
Agatha Christie meets Ghostbusters meets Scooby-Doo in this hilarious, haunted, mystery. JJ and his crew are wonderfully fleshed out and relatable to all kids no matter what their personalities. The spooky feel of a haunted hotel combined with a murder mystery the solving of which includes kids battling ghosts creates a truly enjoyable experience for readers of all ages!
If you have ever read any of my blog posts, or chatted with me in the bookstore then you’ve probably heard about ELIZABETH WEBSTER. And to all of my co-workers rolling their eyes as I yet again sing the praises of this amazing ghostly, humorous, mystery, I just have to say this is a post about spooky middle grade reads. Of course, this book is going on the list.
This story is the perfect gift for the preteen in your life who wants to watch Law & Order, but whose parents want something more age appropriate.
Goosebumps meets Law & Order meets Scooby-Doo in this delightfully spooky middle-grade mystery. Sarcastic, witty, and blunt, Elizabeth Webster is one of the best characters I have ever read. Sounding like a cross between a hard-boiled detective and an awkward teenager, she draws you into her amazing and often strange world. Exciting, hilarious, and full of ghosts and ghouls, ELIZABETH WEBSTER AND THE COURT OF UNCOMMON PLEAS hooks you immediately and leaves you salivating for more!
And last, but not least, another ELIZABETH WEBSTER! Book number two just came out this past October and is just as great and ghoulish as the first. Also this past October we had the author of this fantastic series, William Lashner, on for a virtual event and as he is local as an added bonus he came in and personally signed our entire stock of ELIZABETH WEBSTER books! The best gift just got even better, right?
I’m not obsessed. I’m just passionate.
Elizabeth Webster and the gang are back and better than ever in this hilarious and hauntingly good sequel. With the same snarky and sarcastic narration, Elizabeth draws us even deeper into the world and law offices of Webster & Spawn. Expanding on what he started in his last book, William Lashner delivers an even more fleshed out story not only in the cases Elizabeth takes on but with the loving and often difficult relationship she has with her family and friends. More ghosts, mysteries, and one gremlin (who may or may not have eaten a goat) await in the exciting new adventure, ELIZABETH WEBSTER AND THE PORTAL OF DOOM.
