In Bungou Stray Dogs, characters with abilities are known as “gifted”. Their “gifts” are something they are born with, and as of our introduction to each character, they are able to use them skillfully (with the exception of Atsushi, the main protagonist, but he quickly gets the hang of it). A lot of the abilities have caveats, which makes it all the more interesting. For example, Kunikida has the ability to conjure anything perceptible by writing it in his special notebook, but he can only conjure things roughly the same size as the notebook itself. Kenji has super strength but only when he is absolutely famished. Dazai can stop anyone from using their ability, but only while he is touching them. - ASMA

In Hunter x Hunter, each character who becomes a hunter must master a Nen ability. In order to do this, they must be aware of and strengthen their aura, so they can learn to control it via one or more of the following methods: transmutation, manipulation, enhancement, conjuration, emission, and/or specialization. This post would become very long if I detailed each method, so I’ll just provide some examples of characters in the show. Hisoka, a transmuter type, is able to give his aura the properties of rubber and gum, making it sticky and flexible. Kite, a conjurer type, is able to acquire an offensive weapon by calling upon a nen clown and using a roulette wheel to choose the weapon to conjure. - ASMA

This one is a little more complicated. In Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, the characters use “stands”, which are entities created from energy of their owners. Stands are separate bodies from the user, but the two are connected mentally and the user is (generally) able to control the actions of the stand (kind of like how Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh works - it’s not the best comparison but works to provide a visual guide for those unfamiliar with Jojo’s). As they are connected, users can fight with their stands, blending combat skills with individual special abilities. Examples include Jotaro’s Star Platinum, who has superhuman physical abilities (strength, speed, sight, stability, etc.); and Iggy’s The Fool, who is a pile of sand that Iggy is able to manipulate at will and that can take on the shapes and colors of objects, living or nonliving. - ASMA

In Jujutsu Kaisen, the abilities are called “cursed techniques” or “jujutsu”. While there are technically different types of techniques (innate, inherited, barrier, etc.) jujutsu can really be boiled down to an ability that comes out naturally as characters become more aware of themselves and hone the cursed energy they host. Techniques vary, and can manifest physically or psychologically. A character named Megumi is able to call upon shadow creatures (such as dogs, birds, snakes, etc. and hybrid creatures) during combat. Inumaki uses a cursed speech technique, which allows him to control the actions of others with his speech. - ASMA

In My Hero Academia, 80% of the world’s population has a “quirk” - an ability. These abilities are coded in their DNA, and generally appear around the age of 5. There is a HUGE variety of abilities, and while some of the abilities seem a little underwhelming, it’s amazing what the characters can do with them. To show just how diverse in concept these quirks are, a few examples include Sero, who can shoot tape out of his elbows; Tsuyu, who has abilities of a frog; and Bakugo who can make explosions from the palms of his hands. - ASMA

In One Piece, abilities are acquired after eating a “devil fruit” at the cost of the consumers ability to swim (a potentially fatal trade-off, as the story follows pirates and other sea-farers). There are a finite number of devil fruits that exist, and there is only one of each type of devil fruit. Once eaten, even if it’s just a bite, the devil fruit itself becomes useless and the consumer gains its powers. If a devil fruit user dies, the ability is reincarnated in a random fruit in a random location. There are three major different types of devil fruits: paramecia (ability to modify, or manipulate themselves or objects), logia (ability to transform their body into a natural element), and zoan (ability to transform into a creature). Some examples of devil fruits and their powers include the Dark-Dark fruit, which allows its user to harness the power of a black hole; and the Bird-Bird fruit, which allows its user to turn into a phoenix. - ASMA
