Mackenzie's Summer Picks

T Kingfisher is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors of the year, and I cannot stop recommending her books! In this captivating story, Marra sets out to be save her sister from an abusive prince with the help of a gravewitch, a knight, a fairy godmother, and a demon possessed chicken. NETTLE & BONE is the perfect beach read for fans of fairytales, folklore, and girl power.

THRONE OF GLASS is not to be slept on! Assassins! Ball gowns! Names you can hardly pronounce! Spend your summer being completely sucked into a fantasy series that will rip you to shreds, put you back together, and then RIP YOU TO SHREDS ALL OVER AGAIN! What are you waiting for??? START TODAY!

In her debut adult novel, Nina LaCour stays true to the things she does best: realistic relationships, heart wrenching back stories, and hopeful endings. YERBA BUENA follows Sara and Emilie as they fight for a sense of peace and a place in the world while their stories intertwine, pulling apart and coming together again and again. This book hit me right in the quarter-life-crisis feels and reminded me to fight for myself no matter what!

Do you ever miss the feeling of freedom and adventure that came with summertime when you wete in middle school? No job, no responsibilities, just you, your three best buddies, and a quest to find Ray Brower’s body, the missing kid from a few towns over. (Or at least, that’s what summer looked like for Gordie Lachance.) THE BODY is one of my all time favorite Stephen King stories and a must read for summertime.

In the second installment of the BRIGHT FALLS series, Astrid Parker is trying to get her life back on track after breaking off her engagement to her golden-boy fiancé. She is given the perfect opportunity to prove herself when Innside America, a renovation TV show, comes to town to film the renovation of the Everwood Inn. As the lead designer on the project, nothing can get in Astrid's way...except Jordan Everwood, lead carpenter and granddaughter of the Everwood's owner. This meet-ugly, enemies-to-lovers sapphic romance is full of queer representation, humor, and healing!

This book was exactly the soft, fluffy romance that I needed this summer! After her divorce, Garland looks for summer magic and romance at an adults only summer camp, and reconnects with an ex—then ends up falling for his sister. THAT SUMMER FEELING perfectly captured the magic of summer, and is the perfect beach/lake/summer camp read!

I have to say, I was nervous about reading a super-flu book after COVID...but Erik J Brown handled the subject tastefully, in a way that allowed me to feel some feels, but didn't overwhelm me. ALL THAT'S LEFT IN THE WORLD is end of the world meets queer coming-of-age. I laughed, I cried, I was creeped out and stressed out, but most of all, full of hope for Andrew and Jamie.

THE GIRL FROM THE SEA is full of summer vibes and coming-of-age-feels. Morgan wants nothing more than to keep her big secret to herself until she can leave her island, her family, and her friends behind. Unfortunately for Morgan, the mysterious girl who saved her life isn't so good with secrets... Packed with adorable illustrations, this story is a snapshot of young love, friendship, family, and what it means to be true to yourself.
