The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country (Hardcover)
The newest entry to my favorites list is “The Hill We Climb”. As someone who missed the live performance of this piece until later (and subsequently cried my eyes out at my computer), I couldn’t wait for it to be released in print form. This is by far the most impactful poem on this list for me, with the current political climate and the fact that police brutality hits close to home for my family. But where it would be fair for this poem to focus on the negatives in our nation, it focuses also on hope for the future, the uphill battle we face, but the need for us to “first put our differences aside”. This whole poem is a quotable one, but my personal favorite line was “Because being American is more than a pride we inherit— It’s the past we step into, and how we repair it”. This poem makes me hopeful for a brighter future and will be remembered for many years to come.— Rachele
