Nobody’s ever accused Katniss Everdeen of being a bore. If you’ve read The Hunger Games you know that great stories begin with great characters. Work with young adult authors Elisa Ludwig (the PRETTY CROOKED trilogy) and K.M. Walton (CRACKED and EMPTY) and learn the secrets to creating memorable characters in what you write! In this workshop for writers (ages 13 to adult) we'll teach you how to develop fictional personalities that come alive—and how to make readers fall in love with them.

K. M. Walton is the author of Cracked (Simon Pulse 2012), Empty (Simon Pulse 2013) and the co-author of Teaching Numeracy: 9 Critical Habits to Ignite Mathematical Thinking (Corwin Press 2011) for mathematics teachers K - 8. She is a graduate of West Chester University, with a degree in elementary education. As a former middle-school language-arts teacher she's passionate about ending peer bullying. Since her novels shine the light onto the hideous effects of bullying, she gives school presentations on the topic "The Power of Human Kindness." She lives in PA with her husband, two sons, and cat. Visit the author at kmwalton.com or follow her on twitter @kmwalton1.

Elisa Ludwig is the author of the PRETTY CROOKED trilogy (Katherine Tegen/HarperCollins) and COIN HEIST (Adaptive Studios). Even though she often writes about crime, she's a law-abiding citizen. (She also writes about food and likes to cook.) She lives in Philadelphia with her family. Visit her at elisaludwig.com.

Willa's secret plan seems all too simple: Take from the rich kids at Valley Prep and give to the poor ones.

Yet Willa's turn as Robin Hood at her ultra-exclusive high school is anything but. Bilking her "friends"--known to everyone as the Glitterati--is far from easy. And delivering care packages to the scholarship girls is way more fun than she expected.

Willa Fox was told to stay out of trouble. In fact, it was an order from a very serious juvenile court judge.

However, that was before Willa found her house ransacked . . . and her mother missing. Since Willa's practically an outcast at school for stealing from the Glitterati, she figures she has nothing keeping her in Paradise Valley. So with the help of her pal Tre, Willa violates her probation and hits the California highway in search of the only person who really cares about her.

Willa Fox promised to turn herself in.

But you can't take a thief at her word. . . .

Willa's string of good-hearted but ill-conceived thefts at her former high school Valley Prep catapulted her into a life she hardly knows. She became a cult hero, but soon afterward her mom disappeared, leaving only a cryptic message. When Willa hit the California highway to find her, she discovered a dark family secret: Joanne Fox is not who she says she is--and neither is Willa.

Victor hates his life. He has no friends, gets beaten up at school, and his parents are always criticizing him. Tired of feeling miserable, Victor takes a bottle of his mother's sleeping pills--only to wake up in the hospital.
Bull is angry, and takes all of his rage out on Victor. That makes him feel better, at least a little. But it doesn't stop Bull's grandfather from getting drunk and hitting him. So Bull tries to defend himself with a loaded gun.
When Victor and Bull end up as roommates in the same psych ward, there's no way to escape each other or their problems. Which means things are going to get worse--much worse--before they get better.

Dell is used to disappointment. Ever since her dad left, it's been one let down after another. But no one--not even her best friend--understands all the pain she's going through. So Dell hides behind self-deprecating jokes and forced smiles.
Then the one person she trusts betrays her. Dell is beyond devastated. Without anyone to turn to for comfort, her depression and self-loathing spin out of control. But just how far will she go to make all the heartbreak and the name-calling stop?
